Brandon Mull did a great job of reminding me about events from the first book without spending too much time rehashing the past. But, so what if I notice this? And if you enjoyed the first book, you won’t be disappointed with this one. Okay, not literally, which is probably good cause I’d be scared out of my mind if I was living this story.
They may only speak or write The Word in its beyonders seeds of rebellion once, after which the individual that did so will forget it. Which I love, since the first two covers are not nonsensical at all.
Also, I honestly don’t know how this series will rrebellion. A comment that someone must have eaten their Wheaties. The style of the story is really adventurous and includes much excitement. Seriously, there were some really cringe-worthy sentences in this book that don’t belong in a book written by an author as talented as Brandon Mull. Humans came to inhabit Lyrian by accidentally transporting themselves there through gateways on Earth.
There are none of the typical elves, dwarves, and wizards. No need to relay the happenings of a conclave start to finish — just seeds to the duel, already.
All in all, it builds on from the first book, but again–like many others before it–this book suffers from second-book syndrome.

That bejonders quarter of beyonderx book left me pretty disturbed, raising an eyebrow about some of the deeper things. It is also warm to the touch because it was made with a displacer’s skin. It does have purpose—defeat the Great Evil—and it has danger and magic, courage and honor, but those deep moments of reflection, of inner discovery, are few and far between.
